What most people don't realise is (especially Christians) that the early Church controlled people through fear, the "devil" and "hell" for eg. - These two things as external things, beings, or places do not exist!

You will learn that these are only thought forms and are only internal circumstances that man creates for himself. How can you blame someone that knows no different though? If it really was either "heaven" or "hell" I think we both know what we'd choose.

But this just isn't the case, through that fear, the Churches were able to heard people like sheep and thus took away all of thier personal power and most of thier individualism. - this still happens to this very day, it's quite sad really and there is nothing holy about it.

In the bible there's a very well known quote from Jesus and he actually states very clearly so it can't be misinterpreted that "the kingdom of heaven is within" this means there is no external place above where only christians preval in "heaven" like the church likes to preach but its actually a state of conciousness that can be accessed by anyone, even before their death.
