Review
". . . Wijdicks offers an interesting and very practical insight of neurology in the emergency room . . . an excellent source of inspiration for teaching. All the doctors (from students to consultants) who have to walk through an emergency department should have this book on their bookshelves." --Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry

From published reviews of the First Edition

"One of the fastest growing fields of interest within neurology is acute care of neurologic emergencies...Dr. Wijdicks has produced a unique monograph that combines both emergency room prioritization and basic critical care issues that extend beyond the initial contact with the patient. As a single-authored work, the content represents the expertise and experience of one of the masters in the field of critical care neurology...A great strength of the book is its ease of use; it is very readable, providing practical information with a minimum of superflous text...the stated purpose of this work is to provide a comprehensive approach to patients with neurologic catastrophe during the "golden hour."

It does this with aplomb. This thoughtful and higly applicable work will soon find its way to the bookshelves on emergency room, neurology and neurosurgical resident libraries, and the personal library of any neurologist who sets foot in an emergency department. However, it is far too useful to stay on the shelf for long."--Christopher Commichau, MD, in Neurology

"Overall, this is a well-written and balanced book, which will be of considerable interest to emergency department physicians, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and intensivists. It also contains a wealth of data that will be useful to the trainees."--Dimitri Kullmann, MD, in BRAIN

"...this book provides a comprehensive, relatively well balanced, and easily read resource that should appeal to neurologists, emergency physicians, and neurosurgeons...This compact textbook effectively combines acute neurology with emergency department decision making and fulfills the educational mission it set forth to achieve."--Wendy D. Ziai, MD, in Annals of Neurology

Book Description
This unique text takes a comprehensive approach to the care of patients with neurologic catastrophes immediately after their entry into the emergency department. Wijdicks discusses clinical evaluations, triage, and emergency procedures in detail, and covers many other topics. For this thoroughly updated second edition, he has added eight new chapters, seven of which appear in an entirely new first section on the evaluation of presenting symptoms indicating urgency. The conversational titles of these chapters echo common requests for urgent consultation (e.g. "short of breath," "can't walk or stand," "confused and febrile"). A special feature of this section is the use of algorithms and decision trees in triage - to help the physician make a very fast and yet informed decision. The remaining two sections of the book cover the evaluation and management of evolving catastrophes in the neuraxis and catastrophic neurologic disorders due to specific causes. There is a final new chapter on forensic neurology. This practical handbook will continue to be an invaluable guide for neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, emergency physicians, and their residents and fellows. The third volume in the author's trilogy on critical care neurology, it combines the images of a neuroradiology text with the practical advice of an emergency neurology manual without compromising academic rigor.
